The Monthly Project Box - Rifle Sling with Ostrich Inlay
Why You'll Love It
If you've been waiting for us to bring back a serious leatherworking build, this is the one.
This month, we're building a rifle sling featuring a genuine ostrich leg inlay, and I couldn't be more excited to share it with you. We haven't done a project like this in a long time, and it combines several techniques that every leatherworker should have in their skill set. You'll learn exotic leather inlay work, lining and assembly, stitching, finishing techniques, and even how to achieve rich, professional-looking color through dyeing.
Whether you're building it for yourself, a hunting partner, or as a gift, you'll end up with a project that's both functional and downright good-looking.
About The Project
I designed this project specifically for leatherworkers who are ready to step beyond the basics and build something they'll be proud to use for years. This rifle sling features a striking ostrich leg inlay set into premium vegetable-tanned leather and finished with a soft suede liner.
To make the build as approachable as possible, we've done the heavy lifting for you. Your sling body, strap, and liner arrive clicked out and ready for assembly, and I've included an acrylic template to help guide the process. Then I'll walk you through every step in my latest YouTube build series, from cutting the inlay and preparing the exotic leather to stitching, finishing, and final assembly.
I've even filmed an additional video dedicated to dyeing techniques so you can create beautiful depth and character in the finished piece.
What Makes This Project Box Different
This month's Project Box is completely new and designed by me specifically for our Maker's community. It's the kind of project we haven't offered in a very long time, and that's exactly why I'm so excited about it.
Inside you'll find everything you need to build the sling:
- Clicked-out rifle sling body and strap with suede liner
- Genuine ostrich leg leather
- Acrylic template
- 2 Chicago screws
- 2 Rivets
I'll guide you through the entire build in my latest step-by-step video, where you'll learn how to:
- Create an exotic leather inlay
- Line and assemble the sling
- Sewing the project together
- Finish the leather for a professional look
- Dye veg-tanned leather to create rich, beautiful depth of color
